Hence, power consumers in several parts of the Visayas have to be prepared for power load shedding, particularly during peak hours, because of production shortage.
NGCP’s corporate communications officer, Marcos Quiamco, stated that they are reliant on the quantity of electricity provided by the National Power Corp. to them, which they in turn supply to various electric cooperatives.
Quiamco stated that NGCP must be cautious in power transmission via the Visayas grid or else the submarine cable linking Negros and Cebu may overload.
The NGCP has affirmed an overall power shortage of 142 megawatts (MW), while during April 25-26, 2009, the overall shortage was at 187 MW, as a few units of the Palinpinon Geothermal Power Plants located in Valencia, Negros Oriental are undergoing maintenance.
According to NPC Area Control Center’s report Quiamco stated that the 20 MW Nasuji modular plant of the PGPP 2 and the 35 MW Unit 2 of PGPP 1 were closed for preventive maintenance, while a report from the NGCP said that Unit 3 of PGPP 1 has a derated capacity of 20 MW from 32 MW.
The report also asserted that Power Barge 102 with an overall loading capacity of 20 MW has been dry docked while the 55 MW Cebu Thermal Power Plant 2 is presently under forced outage because of a trip-off.
The Cebu Thermal Power Plant I, which produces an overall capacity of 45 MW, also witnessed forced outage during April 25-26, 2009.
Power has already been reinstated at the said power station as of April 28, 2009, Quiamco said.
