These coal assets for possible sale, which are considered by the company to be non-core, contain over 1.2 billion metric tons of thermal coal, Dow Jones Newswires reported.

Earlier this year, Australia & New Zealand Banking Group was appointed by Newmont to gauge interest in two tenements in the Clarence-Moreton Basin of Queensland.

A Newmont spokeswoman was quoted by Dow Jones Newswires as saying that the company is continuing discussions with a number of parties regarding the possible sale of its Queensland coal assets and no deadline has been set to secure a sale.
