The government funding complements private sector financing totaling $120m for the project comprising 79 large-scale solar projects with a consolidated capacity of 64MW.
New York State Governor Cuomo said that with such investments through NY-Sun program, New York is set to become the major solar energy nation, overlooking climate change and growing the state’s clean energy economy.
"Not only will these projects benefit our environment by reducing dependence on fossil fuels and using renewable energy, but they are also creating well-paying jobs for New Yorkers. These are necessary investments for a bright future in our state."
Allotted to 20 developers, the funds are expected to finance the projects planned across 26 counties across the state at businesses, factories, municipal buildings, colleges and other larger commercial and industrial companies and institutions.
Funding per project is capped at $3m, and all projects require co-funding to leverage state resources, according to the statement.
NYSERDA president and CEO Francis Murray Jr. said: "Governor Cuomo’s NY-Sun initiative has led to unprecedented demand for solar power among large electric consumers. Less than two years old, this is a great success story for New York."
