Angola and Namibia are proposing the development of a hydro power station on the lower Kunene river, with the Baynes site in Angola set to become the subject of fresh studies.

Namibian officials at the Namibia-Angola Permanent Joint Technical Commission (PJTC) meeting in Windhoek took up discussions on the project. The meeting involved discussions on the terms of reference for studies to determine the feasibility of a peaking power station at Baynes. Namibia and Angola jointly completed a study for the development of a 360MW base-load power station at Baynes in 1997.

The dam site for this scheme would be located approximately 40km downstream of Epupa Falls. The feasibility studies are estimated to cost US$3.5M and is expected to be completed by August 2008.
