China is to build a $200 million coal-fired power plant at Jherruk in the Thatta region of Sindh province. The project was announced by a delegation from the China National Machinery Import and Export Corp in Karachi.

The plant will have an initial capacity of 100MW, with the potential for the addition of a further 100MW. Completion of the first tranche is expected within two years.

Coal for the plant will be supplied from the Sondha coal field in Jherruk. Sindh is currently experiencing power shortages. The Pakistan province has estimated coal reserves of 200 billion t, with Jherruk holding around 1.3 billion t. The Sindh government has invited China to consider construction of another coal-fired station with a capacity of 400-600MW.
