India’s Power Ministry has set a target to add 1444.4MW to the country’s installed capacity as part of a new short term power agenda. The new agenda will run for a 100-day period ending in late January 2000.
Hydro’s contribution to the target will be 490MW, generated by government-owned utilities. The National Hydroelectric Power Corporation will contribute 60MW by synchronising the units of the 3x20MW Rangit hydro plant in Sikkim. Another 430MW will come from state electricity board’s new projects.
India’s Power Minister, PR Kumaramangalam, also hopes that three private sector projects will achieve financial closure during the agenda period. These are Maheshwar (400MW), Malana (86MW) and Baspa 2 (300MW).
