Alstom has won a contract valued at US$7.6M from BKK of Norway, to provide all electrical equipment for the Nygard pumped storage power plant.

The scope of supply to the Norwegian plant includes a 65 MVA generator and electrical BoP that covers transformers, HV cables, MV switchgear, LV switchgear, ALSPA control systems, as well as other electrical auxiliaries. The equipment will be supplied from alstom‘s hydro units in Norway (Drammen) and France (Belfort).

The equipment is scheduled for installation on site in May 2004, and the commissioning is to be completed at the end of the year.

The Nygard power plant is located in the western part of Norway, not far from Bergen. As is typical for pumped storage plants, the new generating unit will be used in pumping mode primarily during the wet periods of the year, which are mainly autumn and early spring; in the winter season it will be used in generating mode. However, the unit will be designed so that it is also capable of daily starting and stopping in both modes.
