The display will showcase the companies’ respective solutions: NetLogic’ NLP10142 100GE PHY solution, Xilinx’s Virtex-5 TXT field-programmable gate arrays (FPGA), Sarance Technologies’ 100GE PCS and MAC for Xilinx FPGAs, Avago’ 850nm VCSEL-based parallel optic transmit/receive modules, and Ixia’s 100GE IP test platform. The introduction of all the essential components to design, develop and test a 100GE link will assist the networking and telecommunications customers speed up time-to-market, improve interoperability and decrease development expense for new 100GE systems targeted at data center, carrier core, metro and access aggregation networks.

NetLogic will demonstrate the new solution from March 24 to March 26, 2009 at the San Diego Convention Center in San Diego, California.

The growing adoption of broadband services like PON, 3G/4G mobile and the WiMAX, have created the requirement to rapidly scale network throughputs and capacity for carrier core, metro, access aggregation and data center networks. Leading service providers like AT&T Inc., Comcast Corp. and Verizon Communications have announced early initiatives to test the new 100G technologies over their existing networks. The respective solutions from Xilinx and the company support the draft specification of IEEE 802.3ba 100Gb/s and 40Gb/s Ethernet Task Force, whose original equipment manufacturer (OEM) members incorporate Alcatel-Lucent, Cisco Systems, Force10 Networks, Fujitsu, Huawei Technologies, Juniper Networks and Nortel Networks.

“Key growth vectors like video-intensive IP traffic and the media-rich content being generated around social networking websites, coupled with data center convergence around Ethernet and FCoE is driving the need for higher bandwidth Ethernet pipes in data center, metro edge and core networks,” stated John D’Ambrosia, IEEE P802.3ba 40G/100G Ethernet Task Force chair, and senior scientist at Force10 Networks. “This multi-vendor demonstration organized by NetLogic Microsystems to showcase its 100G PHY ICs demonstrates the feasibility of merchant PHY, MAC, optics and test solutions for 100GE. This will enable switch and router OEM system integrators to start the task of building and testing tomorrow’s Ethernet networks.”

NetLogic’ new NLP10142 100GE PHY solution features new architecture and advanced circuit technologies to supply high 100GE density, higher jitter performance and lower power consumption. The new NLP10142 PHY solution connects to the Xilinx Virtex-5 TXT device, and supports the 100Gbps transmissions over at least 40km on single-mode fiber (SMF) cabling, at least 100m on OM3 multi-mode fiber (MMF), or at least 10m over a copper cable assembly. Furthermore, the NLP10142 solution will be offered in lead-free packaging, to allow customers to develop environmental-friendly system solutions that comply with certain green-initiative regulations.

“We are excited about our collaboration with other market leaders such as Xilinx, Avago and Ixia to provide a complete 100GE design and test solution for our mutual customers,” stated Stefanos Sidiropoulos, vice president of physical layer products at NetLogic. “Our NLP10142 PHY solution offers best-in-class performance and power profile, and enables carriers, service providers and data center owners to seamlessly upgrade their networks to support 100Gbps speeds.”

“We are excited to be partnering with NetLogic Microsystems, who has established itself as a market and technology leader in high-performance, low power 10GE and now 100GE PHY solutions,” stated Mustafa Veziroglu, vice president, product solutions and management at Xilinx. “Our collaborative effort will further extend our leadership position in 100GE through the superior performance of Virtex-5 and enable our mutual customers to deliver a new class of carrier-class equipment with leading-edge performance and programmability that are required to expand IP backbone network capacity and inter-router communication bandwidth.”

Xilinx’s new Virtex-5 TXT devices with a uniform architecture of up to 48 high-speed transceivers with the full hardware PCS provide the only single-chip solution with built-in flexibility and re-programmability to scale as 40GE and 100GE hardware needs and standards mature, while offering the 600Gbps total bandwidth needed to build network bridges like 100GbE to 120Gbps Interlaken, 40Gbps Quad XAUI to 50Gbps Interlaken, OC-768 to OTU-3, and SFI-5 to 4xSFI4.2. Additionally, the Virtex-5 TXT devices are designed to enhance signal integrity and lower the power consumption for reliable operation of 10/100Gbps links, and are fully supported with the application-specific IP, development tools and reference designs for executing high-bandwidth protocol bridging. Hardware enhancements unique to Xilinx transceivers decrease the size of the 100GE and Interlaken cores by over 20%.

“Our demonstration with NetLogic Microsystems, Xilinx and Ixia brings together an eco-system of respective technology leaders to enable the rapid development and deployment of next-generation carrier and data center 100Gigabit Ethernet systems,” stated Sami Nassar, senior director of marketing for Avago’ Fiber Optic Product Division. “As a market leader in fiber optic Ethernet products, Avago will provide 850nm VCSEL technology transceivers in industry standard MSA package styles to support IEEE 802.3ba 40GBASE-SR4 and 100GBASE-SR10 designs.”

“Ixia’s test platform is the only 100GE IP test system available in the industry today,” stated Anupam Sahai, vice president of marketing at Ixia. “In addition to transmitting, receiving, and capturing data at full 100G line rate, our load module implements the new 100Gbs PCS test capabilities.”

Ixia’s new 100GE IP test platform incorporates an implementation of draft 2.0-compliant 100GE physical coding sublayer (PCS) layer with underlying multilane distribution (MLD) architecture.
