The company expanded the usage of waste and residue raw materials to 742,000t for refining into renewable fuels, when compared to just 330,000t in 2011.

Neste particularly increased the use of waste animal fat, derived from the fish processing industry, to expand its feedstock base.

Neste oil products and renewables executive vice president Matti Lehmus remarked that the increase in use of waste and residues and extension of feedstock base meet the company’s pre-defined targets.

"The amount of renewable diesel that Neste Oil produces from waste and residues today is equivalent to the annual fuel consumption of 740,000 cars," Lehmus said.

Overall, Neste Oil used 2.1 million tons of renewable inputs in 2012, comprising 65% sustainably produced palm oil and 35% waste and residues.

The company also commissioned Europe’s first pilot plant for microbial oil production from waste at its Technology Center at Porvoo.
