MDX Group of Thailand and the Hydroelectric Power Department of Myanmar have agreed to develop a major hydro power project on Myanmar's Thanlwin river in the southern part of Shan state

As part of the joint venture around US$6B will be invested into the construction of the 7110MW Ta Sang hydro power project, which is set to be completed within 15 years. Electricity generated from the plant will mainly be sold to Thailand with a certain amount supplied to areas in Myanmar free of charge.

In December last year, Myanmar and the Electricity Generating Authority of Thailand (EGAT) also signed an agreement to implement the Hutgyi hydro power project on Thanlwin river, in the eastern Kayin state. The Hutgyi project consists of a 600MW plant designed to produce 3.82BkWh yearly.
