The Illuminator has a power on command reserve battery. This technology was initially used in military applications. The compaany claims that the power on command reserve battery can sit unused on a shelf or in a vehicle’s glove box for years and still be ready to go with full power in an emergency situation.
In addition, the reserve battery can charge a cell phone or other portable electronic device via the illuminator’s built-in USB port, allowing for an emergency phone call when help is urgently needed.
Inside the battery, a custom-designed internal barrier and triggering mechanism is used to prevent the liquid electrolyte from interacting with the solid electrodes until the battery is manually activated. This gives the battery a shelf life of at least 20 years prior to activation. Once activated by a simple twist of a knob, the battery ramps immediately to full power, the company said.
For everyday use, the Illuminator comes with two standard CR123-style batteries, which provide a bright white light and can also be used as a power source through the standard USB port.
