Japan’s Aomori government set to approve MOX plant
The first commercial plant to process mixed uranium and plutonium oxide (MOX) nuclear fuel in Japan is set to go-ahead. The governor of the Aomori prefecture, Shingo Mimura, is reportedly expected to sign the basic request by the end of the month, allowing Japan Nuclear Fuel Ltd to construct the plant in Rokkashomura.
About 130 tonnes of MOX are expected to be produced annually at the new plant, which will cost some ¥120 billion ($1.1 billion) to construct.
