Mott MacDonald is leading a consortium – including Acres International of Canada and Línuhönnun of Reykjavik – appointed to design a new hydro power station in Iceland.
The Búdarháls project, located some 120km east of Reykjavik, is being developed by Landsvikjun, Iceland’s utility company responsible for producing over 90% of the country’s electric power. The new station is intended to provide increased power capacity in the rapidly growing aluminium industry in Iceland.
The 100MW plant comprises an earthfill dam approximately 2.3km long with a maximum height of 24m, a 4km long headrace tunnel, a stilling basin, a surface power house with two Kaplan turbines and a substation with gas insulated switchgear.
