Unit 2 of the Mochovce nuclear power plant started commercial operation following its safety upgrade by Siemens and Framatome.

The upgrade order was first placed in spring 1996, with Siemens and Framatome to implement about half of the 87 defined safety improvements. The safety improvements in the two VVER-440/V213 units were based on the recommendations of the IAEA.

Construction of the Russian-designed Mochovce plant started in 1983.
