An industrial consortium plans to set up a private generation arm

A consortium of more than 30 industrial companies in Mexico’s Monterrey have formed an alliance with the intention of generating their own power. The so-called Genermex consortium is the latest group to resort to private generation having baulked at high peak rates for electricity.

With regulatory approval to generate 125 MW granted in late 2002, construction of the gas-fired plant is expected to begin in early 2005 at an estimated cost of $130 million. The consortium plans to use GE turbines.
