The 64-turbine wind farm, which is expected to complete in late 2014, is being constructed near Ballarat in Victoria.

The new wind farm will have a capacity to produce about 131 MW, bringing Meridian’s total power generation in Australia to 201 MW.

Mt Mercer, which complements the existing Mt Millar wind farm in South Australia, is the third wind farm project for Meridian in the country.

Meridian Energy CEO Mark Binns said the company considers Australia as the most attractive market to export its capabilities and expertise in wind power development.

"Through innovative contractual arrangements and close co-operation with our partners, we have demonstrated that new renewable energy projects can be successfully delivered," added Binns.

"In particular, the Federal Government’s RET Scheme has provided a strong financial incentive to invest in wind farms in Australia."
