The project will examine the use of solid sorbent technology for the capture of carbon dioxide (CO2) from coal and gas-fired power station flue gases, targeting a significant cost reduction in carbon dioxide capture.
Masdar and DoE will co-fund the innovative research, with Masdar providing an additional $0.7m funding to the DoE’s $3m budget.
Masdar and RTI will also extend the research scope into the technology’s application for gas fired power station flue gases.
RTI’s Engineering and Technology unit vice president David Myers said that the process technology is at a mature stage and initial sorbent tests have indicated positive results.
