The thermal power facility was proposed by Maharashtra State Power Generation (Mahagenco) to be constructed at Koradi in Nagpur.
An executive of Mahagenco informed the source that the financial bids were opened, of which L&T was the lowest among the three bidders. “If the state power generation company board approves, L&T could get an order of around INR70 billion. Currently, we are scrutinising bid documents.”
The second lowest bidder was Bharat Heavy Electricals and the third was Doosan Heavy Industries & Construction of South Korea. The executive confirmed that the board would finalize the order next week. By 2012, the state power production company has aimed at adding approximately 5,000MW.
Mahagenco is expected to invite bids for the remaining Koradi power plant orders that consist of other equipments, systems, components and structures, outside the BTG contract, within the next few months. The power plant is scheduled to be fully operational by the end of 2014.
For the manufacture of super-critical boilers, turbines and generators in India, L&T operates a partnership with Mitsubishi Heavy Industries, a Japan-based company. Through this JV, the company over the next three years intends to invest approximately INR9 billion, to construct two facilities at Hazira for manufacturing super-critical technology-based boilers and turbines and generators, those are scheduled to be operational by 2010.
