Around 3,000 smart meters will be tested initially by the Electricite du Liban (EDL) prior to a rollout of 1.2 million meters over a period of around two years, The Daily Star reported.
Lebanon Ministry of Energy and Water senior official said that the benefit of the smart meters is that it can be monitored from the command-and-control room and without the need to send bill collectors to examine these meters closely.
The ministry contracted three service providers to reduce waste and theft, improve power production and increase bill collection.
Ministry said, "The center which will monitor the meters from EDL’s building can read very accurately the real consumption of electricity for each household.
"There is no need to send an employee to read the meter and then report his reading to EDL."
