Under this project, LanzaTech will collaborate with The City College of New York (CUNY), Louisiana State University (LSU) and Michigan Technological University (Michigan Tech) to extend its core fermentation technology and produce fuels and chemicals more efficiently, economically and at a smaller scale.
As part the joint project, LanzaTech will provide expertise in gas fermentation, the CUNY Energy Institute will offer reactor design with experimental reactor design expertise, and LSU will render reactor modeling capabilities.
LanzaTech and Michigan Tech will validate the economic and life cycle analysis impacts of this technology thereafter.
The new design will enable the technology to be employed in other carbon-rich waste resources that comprise carbon monoxide, carbon dioxide and hydrogen, and further enhance the emission reduction capabilities across various industries.
The $4m grant awarded to the company forms part of ARPA-E’s $34m REMOTE (Reducing Emissions using Methanotrophic Organisms for Transportation Energy) program, which is aimed at upgrading transformational bioconversion technologies to produce transportation fuels cost effectively.
