Employing General Electric’s (GE) gas turbine generator technology, the government-owned Sabiya station is currently producing over 2,000MW of additional electricity for the grid.
The simple cycle mode of the project operated six GE 9FA gas turbines to generate nearly 1,400MW electricity, when phase one was implemented in June 2011.
GE Energy for the Middle East president and CEO Joseph Anis said:”The successful completion of phase two of the Sabiya combined-cycle power project is a reflection of the Ministry of Electricity and Water’s commitment to provide reliable electricity for the people of Kuwait.”
The combined-cycle conversion will help the plant to increase its output without any increase in fuel consumption, eventually accelerating Kuwait’s robust business and residential growth.
GE will now support the station’s commercial operation as part of a seven-year operation and maintenance agreement.
The power plant has been built in collaboration with GE and Hyundai Heavy Industries (HHI) in simple operation mode, to boost the country’s power generation by 20%.
