Amec Foster Wheeler has been awarded a contract to upgrade the fire protection system at Eskom’s Koeberg nuclear power station in Cape Town, South Africa.
The three-year contract covers design, installation, procurement and commissioning of a new state-of-the-art fire protection system. The value of the contract was not disclosed.
"This is one of the largest fire engineering contracts to be awarded to our Clean Energy business in South Africa and further enhances our reputation with Eskom, the country’s largest energy utility company," said Andy White, vice president of Amec Foster Wheeler’s nuclear services business.
"This vital project will not only enhance the safety of the station but will also help in developing our workforce, as we will be undertaking a training programme for engineering students, thereby boosting the local skills and expertise in the region."
The Koeberg nuclear power plant, which began operation in 1984/5, comprises two 965 MW pressurised water reactors.
