The contracts, which have been awarded to local and international companies, are part of the Phase 13 of the Qatar Power Transmission System Expansion plan.
Construction of 77 substations and laying of 453.3km Extra High Voltage (EHV) cables will be undertaken to expand the transmission network.
Kahramaa’s engineering president Essa bin Hilal Al Kuwari was quoted by The Peninsula as saying: “The projects will serve different sectors in the country, the most important of which is the land sector, which has been allocated by the government to the citizens.”
Besides enabling Kahramaa to help in reaching Qatar National Vision 2030, the projects will contribute to enhancing the power infracstructure in and around Doha.
Al Kuwari said that the expansion plan is aimed at meeting the growing demand for electricity in Qatar, as the country continues to show rapid development and urbanisation.
The Phase 13 projects will also include upgrading of few old substations.
Siemens AG & Siemens consortium (Qatar ), Larsen& Toubro (India), NCC (KSA), Gulfar (Qatar) and Best & Betas Consortium (Turkey) have secured contracts for construction of substations.
Larsen & Toubro (L&T) Construction announced that it has won a $817m contract from Kahramaa to the engineering, procurement and construction of 30 new Gas Insulated Substations of varying voltage levels of 220 kV, 132 kV and 66 kV.
L&T will also be respobsible for laying of approximately 560 km of 132 kV and 66 kV of underground cables.
The company said that the project is scheduled to be completed in phases from 15 to 32 months.
Contracts for laying of transmission cables have been awarded to LS Cable and system (South Korea) , Larsen & Toubro (India), Furukawa (Japan) and Elsewedy Cables (Qatar & Egypt).
