China's state council has approved proposals for a new 3.6GW hydro power plant in the south west of the country.
Plans for the Jinping station, reported by China’s Xinhua news agency, include the construction of a 305m dam on the Yalong river. Work will begin in 2005 and is expected to be completed by 2013, costing around US$2.8B, added Xinhua.
