UK-based engineering consultancy Idom Merebrook announced it has been awarded a contract to carry out a reliability survey of the support systems for the Joint European Torus at the Culham Centre for Fusion Energy.
UK-based engineering consultancy Idom Merebrook announced it has been awarded a contract to carry out a reliability survey of the support systems for the Joint European Torus at the Culham Centre for Fusion Energy.
The work, which began in the summer, is expected to continue into early 2015.
The scope includes surveying the general condition, operating experience and maintenance history of equipment and also assessing scope for factors such as neutron activation, neutron embrittlement, metal fatigue and environmental stress.
"The brief from UK Atomic Energy Authority…was to detect potential vulnerabilities, identify opportunities for improvements in the support systems and earmark redundant equipment for removal in support of preparations for the second Deuterium-Tritium (D-T) experimental campaign on JET," said Robin Carter, director, Nuclear Services at Idom Merebrook.
The D-T tests, which are currently scheduled for 2017-18, will be the first with tritium since 2003 and will act as an important ‘dress rehearsal’ for the key international ITER project.
