Once it has dealt with the most pressing issues, the team of experts will work on a more comprehensive strategy to help tackle the problem of extreme floods in the longer term.
The plan was announced during the second meeting of the India-Nepal Joint Committee on Water Resources (JCWR), which took place in New Delhi last week. Discussions included proposals to construct reservoirs to mitigate the problem of flooding from the Kamla and Bagmarti rivers and the adoption of a jointly prepared master plan on flood forecasting and warning.
Delegations from the two countries praised the recent opening in Nepal of an Indian government-assisted office, which is carrying out field investigations for the Sapt Kosi High dam and Sun Kosi storage-diversion projects.
The JCWR also said it wanted early implementation of the Pancheshwar multi-purpose project and the 300MW Upper Karnali hydro project in Nepal.
