The controversial plan was given go ahead despite opposition following the 2011 Fukushima nuclear disaster.
In line with this effort, Japan’s nuclear power reactors, which are currently idled, are expected to resume operations, and some of themwill see an extended operational life of 60 years from current limited at 40 years in principle.
Under the proposed best energy mix, the renewable energy sources will account for 22%-24% whereas with power generation target for liquefied natural gas (LNG) is set at 27% and coal at 26%, reported Reuters.
The reactors shutdown has also forced Japan to relay on costly coal and LNG imports, thus increasing the costs of power.
The proposal is a part of Japan’s efforts to boost nuclear power and renewable energy in order to reduce global warming, reported The Japan News.
Meanwhile, Tokyo University of Science Professor Takeo Kikkawa told the committee meeting said: "I am against this draft.
"The reason is that this does not match Japan’s basic energy plan to reduce reliance on nuclear power as much as possible and maximise introduction of renewable energy."
The Economy, Trade and Industry Ministry will now seek public comments on the proposal for a final decision scheduled in July this year.
