Cumulatively the Japanese government has injected 3.5 trillion yen ($44.25bn) into Tepco since reactor meltdowns at the Fukushima Daiichi plant triggered by last year’s earthquake and tsunami.
The government will now take over control of the power-utility and raises hope of avoiding its complete collapse.
A proposal to scrap all reactors at Tepco’s Kashiwazaki-Kariwa plant on the Sea of Japan coast was rejected. It sought to replace Kashiwazaki-Kariwa plant with a new fuel-efficient, gas-fired combined cycle power station, but it could not secure shareholders approval.
It is estimated that the total cost of disaster at the Fukushima plant is over $100bn.
