The Ioyama volcano, which has been lying dormant, has seen small tremors.

The new volcanic activitiy comes almost a month after the eruption of Mt Ontake volcano, which killed nearly 60 people.

Japan is located on the "Ring of Fire" band, with over 100 volcanoes.

A government-commissioned panel’s head Toshitsugu Fujii was cited by News.com.au as saying that an eruption at one of several volcanoes surrounding the Sendai nuclear power plant could lead to a major disaster.

Following the disaster at Fukushima nuclear power plant, there has been widespread public mistrust against the nuclear plants. A second such disaster could do irreparable damage to the nation’s nuclear power industry.

Mount Sakurajima is another volcano, which is located around 40km from the Sendai facility. This is an active volcano but with minor eruptions.

Meanwhile, Agence France-Presse (AFP) cited Kobe University earth sciences professor Yoshiyuki Tatsumi and associate professor Keiko Suzuki as saying in a study that Japan could be 95% destroyed due to volcanic eruption over the next century.
