The program envisages developing a bio-fuels and toxic remediation facility employing OriginOil’s algae harvesting technology.
The program will also look to help eliminate radioactive materials given that algae has been shown to absorb radioactive cesium, a contaminant that can cause radiation sickness and death.
The Institute of Physical and Chemical Research recently conducted a test showing a strain of microalgae successfully removing 90% of all radioactive material from cesium-contaminated water.
Research Institute of Tsukuba Bio-tech president Dr. Takaaki Maekawa drew attention to the strategic support they have from the agriculture ministry for their association with OriginOil.
"It is our intention that more than a hundred algae production sites in Japan will include OriginOil technology," said Maekawa.
OriginOil CEO Riggs Eckelberry added, "We are delighted that our longtime collaborator, Doctor Maekawa, has succeeded in receiving major funding approval for these strategic algae initiatives."
"We intend to put all available resources to work to help him alleviate the energy and environmental crises afflicting the people of Japan."
According to Dr. Maekawa said that the institute currently has funding for two sites, each over an acre in size; one situated near Narita International Airport and the other in Fukushima.
