Mitsubishi Electric Corporation (MELCO) will deploy Itron's smart grid software for a major smart metering project with Chubu Electric Power Company. Itron’s smart grid software will provide a critical function within the overall solution, securely collecting high-volumes of data to empower consumers to conserve energy and improve back-end utility processes.

Itron’s flexible OpenWay Collection Engine software will be installed at Chubu Electric to securely collect and relay a high-volume of data from field routers and approximately 10 million smart meters and deliver that data to the utility’s meter data management system. Itron’s collection engine will facilitate customer conservation efforts in Japan.

"This unique deployment at Chubu Electric demonstrates the true flexibility and interoperability of Itron’s OpenWay platform, which can adapt to meet various utility needs and deployment configurations. We are pleased to collaborate with the Mitsubishi Electric Corporation to bring a complete smart metering solution to Japan," said Alan White, Itron vice president of sales, marketing and delivery for Electricity in the Asia Pacific.

"With proven experience in managing nearly 14 million endpoints every day, our smart grid software will effectively and securely manage high-volumes of data at Chubu Electric Power Company, assisting with its energy conservation efforts."

"MELCO chose to collaborate with Itron based on the proven scalability and maturity of its systems," said Yukitoki Tsukamoto, Deputy General Manager and Project Manager for this project. "We look forward to working with an industry-leading company with the experience to deliver smart metering benefits at scale to Chubu Electric Power Company."
