The turnout of the participants increased to 57% in this referendum, of which 96% voters voted against the referendum’s four motions.

Berlusconi hoped Italy would meet 25% of its electricity needs with nuclear energy by 2030.

Fossil fuels provided 64.8% of electricity used by Italy in 2010, while 22.2% came from renewable energy sources and 13% was imported from abroad, reports BBC news.

The decision to drop nuclear plants comes on the heels of Germany’s decision on 30 May 2011 to phase out atomic energy between 2015 to 2022.

Switzerland is also planning to remove the country’s nuclear plants by 2034.

Apart from the nuclear power regeneration, the participants also voted against the referendums that supported the privatisation of water supplies, and government ministers being exempted from court cases.
