FARS News Agency cited Araqi as saying that the mini-LNG plants, each with a storage capacity of 90 million cubic meters (mcm) of natural gas, will be built in four border regions that have low temperature.

Mini-LNG facilities will enable supply of gas to villages and will be more cost-efective than pipe networks, Araqi said.

The plants, which will be constructed with an investment of $100m, can stabilize the gas supply network of the country.

In June, about 20 locations have been identified for the construction of small liquefied natural gas (LNG) facilities, the Natural Gas Storage Company chief Massoud Samivand was quoted by the news agency as saying.

Iran’s private sector companies will build the plants. Samivand added: "Some five investors have so far obtained the necessary license for signing contract to set up the plants."
