Iran said that it should have 6.5GW of hydro capacity in the near future following completion of construction of a programme of 88 dam projects.

The Energy Ministry confirmed that 18 dam projects were on schedule to be completed by 20 March, which marks the end of the Iranian year.

No deadline was given for the completion of the 88 dams, which was an update on the total of 85 issued in May. The Ministry of Water Affairs has previously said that a further 176 dam projects were also being investigated.

Recently, Iran has had separate talks with Syria , Azerbaijan, China and Turkey that have included dam projects as areas for co-operation.

Iran plans to set up a joint company with Syria in water and dams, and for its planned co-operation with Azerbaijan it is looking also to wider energy and other infrastructure projects.
