Construction has begun on the 190MW Zhiganglaka hydroelectric power station on the upper reaches of the Yellow river in China. This is the first power project solely funded by overseas investment in Qinghai Province.

  The project is jointly funded by AES Corporation of the US and a Hong Kong company. The hydro plant is expected to generate 762GWh of electricity annually upon completion. Construction, which began on 2 August, is expected to be completed before October 2005. The first power generating unit is scheduled to go into operation in February 2005.
