SunEdison said that the 20-year power-purchase agreement represents its largest deal signed under the open-access solar framework, which enables selling of electricity directly to customers through the national grid.
As part of the deal, SunEdison will develop solar power plants in the Indian state of Madhya Pradesh to generate 375,000MWh a year.
SunEdison Asia Pacific and Sub-Saharan Africa president Pashupathy Gopalan said: "The people of New Delhi will benefit from clean, reliable and affordable energy as a result of this project."
The project is expected to contribute to the Indian Government’s target to generate 100GW of solar power by 2022.
Tata Power Delhi Distribution CEO and managing director Praveer Sinha said: "Renewable energy is a big focus for TPDDL, and signing this power purchase agreement with SunEdison highlights our commitment."
SunEdison Services will be responsible for the operation and maintenance of the solar plants, which will help in reducing about 300,000t of carbon dioxide emissions.
TPDDL is a joint venture between Tata Power and the Government of National Capital Territory (NCT) of Delhi.
