The move comes as SunEdison won a bid through an e-reverse auction by offering a lowest tariff of 4.63 rupees ($0.0706) per KWh for the projects, breaking the previous record of SkyPower’s Rs5.05 per KWh for a 150MW project in the state of Madhya Pradesh.
SunEdison was selected over other bidders including SoftBank Group, Trina Solar, Enel Green Power, Reliance Power, ReNew Power Ventures, Solar Arise, Acme Solar and Orange Renewable Power, among others.
NTPC received 30 bids, totaling 5,500MW of solar capacity.
Work under the project includes the construction of 10 solar farms, each with 50MW capacity, at Gani-Sakunala Solar Park in Kurnool District of the state, as part of the government’s Jawaharlal Nehru National Solar Mission.
The government of India is aimed at having 100GW of installed solar capacity by 2022, in a bid to reduce dependency on coal to generate electricity and combat climate change.
The country currently has 4GW of solar capacity.
Earlier in September, SunEdison inked a memorandum of understanding to develop 2GW of renewable energy projects in Tamil Nadu.
The proposed 2GW projects form a part of the company’s strategy to develop 15.2GW of renewable energy in the country by 2022.
