Unit 2 at India’s Kudankulam NPP, a Russian supplied VVER-1000 reactor, was connected to the southern grid on 29 August, and is now slowly increasing power production from an initial generation of 100MWe, generating 200MW of power. When it was synchronized, the unit was producing less than 100MW. Soon after attaining criticality, the unit underwent several tests and the authorities were awaiting approval from the Atomic Energy Regulatory Board (AERB) for grid connection, Kudankulam site director R S Sundar said. ''The unit is being watched closely. After it attains a particular level of generation, it will be shut down for further tests. It will be restarted once again, and the power generation will be increased. The unit is expected to attain full capacity in a few months after which it would be commissioned formally," he added.

Kudankulam-2 is the India’s 22nd nuclear power reactor unit, and its second pressurized water reactor. The unit will bring the total amount of nuclear energy generated in India to 6,780MWe. On 10 August, India’s Prime Minister Narendra Modi said five more 1,000MWe units would be built at Kudankulam with Russian assistance. He was speaking at the formal commissioning of unit 1, which was connected to the southern grid on 31 December 2014.
