India’s Power Ministry is expected to abandon plans to divide the Power Grid Corporation of India Ltd (PGCIL) into two separate bodies which would operate and develop the national transmission network.

According to local media reports, the Power Ministry had reviewed the dual role of PGCIL as Central Transmission Utility as well as operator of regional load dispatch centres earlier this year and concluded that there is no necessity for separating the two functions of Power Grid Corp. A formal decision is expected to be delivered shortly.

Concerns that PGCIL’s role as system operator would discourage private investment in the transmission sector prompted the review.
