India-based Chamundeshwari Electricity Supply (CESC) said that it will adopt and implement smart grid technology for its power supply management in Mysore, Karnataka.

Smart grid technology uses digital and automated technology from the supply side to end users to enhance reliability and reduce waste.

The technology will also enable companies to anticipate system disturbances and respond to it.

During a national seminar on mart grid technologies: Opportunities and challenges, CESC technical director Bhagya Naik said that the Union government has granted INR320m ($5.3m) to CESC for application and implementation of the project.

Central Power Research Institute Bangalore director-general N Murugesan said, "It delivers electricity from supplier to the end user using digital technology to save power, reduce cost and increase reliability."

Murugesan said centralized power generation, demand-driven control and unidirectional transmission are considered obsolete.

"Now, smart grid technology is a priority and it is the future too. It delivers electricity from supplier to the end user using digital technology to save power, reduce cost and increase reliability," Murugesan added.
