Several anti-nuclear activists have filed petitions regarding the safety of the project.
In its ruling, the court said Kudankulam plant is safe and secure and it is necessary for larger public interest and economic growth of India.
Kudankulam power plant is under construction in Tamil Nadu’s Tirunelveli district and the progress has been delayed due to anti-nuclear protests by the locals and People’s Movement Against Nuclear Energy.
The plant features two 1GW reactors of the VVER-1000 model, which are being constructed by the Nuclear Power corporation of India and Atomstroyexport.
After completion, they are claimed to become the largest nuclear power generation complex in India producing 2GW of electric power.
