Over US$77.8M of Indian money is to be spent on the reconstruction of the first stage of Afghanistan’s Salma dam project.

The work is to be carried out by India’s Water and Power Consultancy Services Ltd (WAPCOS) over the next four years. The ministry of external affairs assigned the responsibility of carrying out pre-feasibility and other detailed studies to WAPCOS following an approach from the Afghan government.

Technical and cost appraisals have been carried out by the Central Water Commission under the ministry of water resources.

Once completed, Herat province’s Salma dam is to have a total installed generating capacity of 42MW.
