The new mines will be opened as the state-controlled coal mining company Coal India’s plan to double its production by the next five years.
Presently, Coal India produces 500000000 tonnes per year which is planned to be increased to 1500000000 tonnes by 2020.
The government has already conducted detailed mine-by-mine study and published the results.
Indo-Asian News Service cited Indian Coal and Power Minister Piyush Goyal as saying that in 2014 Coal India managed to achieve 32 million tones of increase in fossil fuel production, and the increase in coal production led to 12% surge in power production last year.
However, he highlighted that coal imports will remain unchanged for time being.
