The Indian Government is targeting an installated wind power generation capacity of 15000MW by the end of 2017.

According to the Indian New and Renewable Energy ministry, capital expenditure for establishing one mega watt of wind power is pegged at approximately INR60m ($1.09m).

The government has been aggressively promoting wind power projects through private sector investment via promotional incentives and 10 years tax holiday on income generated from wind power projects.

Indian Renewable Energy Development Agency (IREDA) and other Financial Institutions are providing loans for installing windmills while the Centre for Wind Energy Technology will provide the technical support for the installations.

Total installed capacity in the country, currently stands at 18551MW representing 9% of the total installed power capacity.
