For this project, the government has identified large tracks of land in eastern state of Rajasthan, Kargil and Ladakh.

MNRE minister Farooq Abdullah said that the phase one of the Jawaharlal Nehru National Solar Mission was successful where the the project generated over 1.6GW of solar power against 11GW target.

He added that the main challenge was starting a transmission line in the areas of Kargil and Ladakh so that power could be transferred to the other parts of the country.

In addressing the solar power developers meeting in New Delhi, India, Abdullah focused on the need for new research to ensure storage of solar energy for longer time.

He stated that the ministry is planning to use mobile phone towers to generate power through solar and wind energy.

MNRE secretary Ratan P.Watal said that the development of solar power would meet the energy resources of around 40% of the population which lacked access to energy resources.
