ILF Consulting Engineers is to consult on the refurbishment of Qairokkum hydropower rehabilitation project in Tajikistan in a project financed by the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development.

State-owned power facility Barqi Tojik contracted ILF to work on the scheme, which is the EBRD’s largest investment in Tajikistan to date.

Located on the Syr-Darya River in northern Tajikistan, the hydroelectric power plant was commissioned in 1959, has six generating units with a total installed capacity of 126MW and an average annual generation of 700GWh. The hydropower plant is a storage type facility with seasonal regulation of the reservoir used for irrigation and power.

Most of the project’s hydro mechanical and electrical equipment have reached the end of their design life and rehabilitation will increase dam safety and resilience to climate change. An improved electricity supply will see capacity increase to 174MW and total generation up to 900GWh/yr.

The project will be implemented in two phases with a total investment of about €157M. ILF’s mandate includes support during the tender and award process of the construction and supply contracts, as well as during the construction and commissioning phase.
