The two distribution centers will have a solar generating capacity totaling 4.92MW with an annual output of 5.9 million kilowatt hours (kWh) of electricity offsetting 4,509 tons of carbon dioxide.

IKEA US president Mike Ward said the company is increasing its solar presence in the US with installation of solar energy systems at the two east coast distribution centers.

"With only 44 locations nationwide, we try to contribute whenever and wherever possible to creating a better everyday life for the many.

"These plans for installing solar panels on the roofs of two additional distribution centers demonstrate that our sustainable commitment extends beyond just stores, into all facets of the retail operations," said Ward.

Inovateus Solar, a solar power distributor and integrator has been contracted to deliver the project.

The Perryville distribution center will see the installation of 18,535 panels generating 3.2 million kWh of electricity per year while the Westampton centre will see 15,609 panels being installed generating 2.65 million kWh of electricity per annum.

It currently has 17 solar energy systems operational with 20 installations underway.
