The wind farm acquisition marks IKEA Group’s single largest renewable energy investment made till date globally.
Scheduled to be fully operational in late 2015, the wind farm would contribute significantly to the IKEA Group 2020 goal to generate as much renewable energy as the total energy the company consumes globally.
Featuring 55 Acciona Windpower AW125/3000 turbines, the wind facility will generate enough energy to meet the average annual electricity needs of 59,000 homes in the US.
Apex Clean Energy will build and manage the wind farm, which will be fully owned by IKEA.
IKEA US acting president and CFO Rob Olson said: "We invest in renewable energy to become more sustainable as a business and also because it makes good business sense."
The acquisition follows purchase of 98MW Hoopeston project in Illinois, US, by IKEA.
Together, the two wind farms are estimated to produce about1,000 gigawatt hours of electricity per year, which is enough to serve about 90,000 households in America.
IKEA, which is planning to generate 100% of its energy from renewable energy source by 2020, has acquired, or agreed to buy 279 turbines in nine countries, and plans to invest $1.9bn in wind and solar projects by the end of 2015.
