North Carolina Utilities Commission has approved a proposal from Iberdrola Renewables, to build a 300MW wind farm in North Carolina, US.

The $600m Desert Wind Power project will be located on 20,000 acres and will provide electricity to 55,000 to 70,000 homes in the state.

Work on the project is expected to begin late this year.

The project must ensure that the 150 wind turbines to be erected at the facility do not interfere with wildlife habitats, bird migration patterns or military flight routes.

The project may secure a federal grant which could cover 30% of the development cost, reports Reuters.
