Iberdrola took part in a $12m round of investment in QBotix along with German firm E.ON, New Enterprise Associates, Firelake Capital Management and Draper Nexus.

QBotix, which was established in August 2010, develops robotic technology for renewable generation facilities.

The company creates intelligent, mobile and rubbed robots for their optimized tracker system which enhances project economics in the commercial and utility-scale solar power plant projects.

Iberdrola said the robotic technology in QBotix’s projects will reduce development and operation costs in renewable projects.

The acquisition complements Iberdrola’s plans to promote sustainable and competitive energy models for the future.

Iberdrola acquired the stake in QBotix through its Perseo corporate risk capital scheme, which was established in 2008 and allocated €70m to invest in technologies and new business models of the energy sector.

Iberdrola director of innovation Agustín Delgado said, "This is yet another example of our collaboration with start-ups that are helping to meet the challenges faced by our sector in order to guarantee a sustainable energy model for the future."
